The short answer

In October 2026 a running sedan on an open carrier costs about $1,305 from New York to Dallas, $1,065 from Los Angeles to Houston and $870 from Chicago to Austin. Leaving Texas costs less on most lanes we priced: Houston to New York is about $1,085 and Dallas to Miami about $655. Gulf Coast pickups pause during hurricane watches.

Into Texas or out of it: what the direction does to the price

Leaving Texas costs less on 5 of the 6 pairs priced this month. Carriers price the empty miles home, so the busier direction costs more. Each pair below is the same out-of-state city in both directions, running sedan, open carrier.

What it costs

What it costs to ship a car to or from Texas

Interstate 10 runs just under 880 miles across Texas, from the New Mexico line above El Paso to the Sabine River at Orange. A car shipped from El Paso to Beaumont covers more road than one shipped from Atlanta to Dallas, which is 783 miles. So the first question on a Texas quote is where in Texas. Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Austin and San Antonio sit on a triangle of interstates (I-35, I-45 and I-10) that car haulers cross every day in every direction, and a pickup inside it rarely waits long. Amarillo on I-40, Midland and Odessa on I-20, El Paso at the far western tip, and McAllen and Brownsville in the Rio Grande Valley are each their own lane, with fewer trucks passing.

The prices on this page come from twelve lanes we priced in October 2026 between those four metros and six large cities in other states, plus the lane tables below. They describe a running sedan on an open carrier. On five of the six city pairs, the trip out of Texas costs less than the trip in. Houston to New York is about $1,085 while New York to Dallas is about $1,305, and Houston to Atlanta is about $630 against $750 from Atlanta to Dallas. San Antonio to Chicago is the exception, about $960 against $870 for Chicago to Austin.

These are October 2026 figures for the state. Your exact lane, vehicle, and week take about 30 seconds.

  • Dallas car shipping

Dallas sits on I-35E, I-30, I-45 and I-20, and more of our Texas lanes start or end here than anywhere else in the state. New York to Dallas is about $1,305, while Dallas to New York is about $1,030. Germantown, Maryland to Plano priced at about $1,205. Plano and McKinney subdivisions take the truck at the door unless HOA rules say otherwise.

  • Austin car shipping

Austin is on I-35 between Dallas and San Antonio, and relocations from California and the Northeast bring many of its cars. Chicago to Austin is about $870, New York to Austin about $1,250 and San Francisco to Austin about $1,350. Downtown towers and the streets of UT's West Campus usually mean a meet-up on the I-35 frontage road.

Shipping a car to Texas

Most cars coming into Texas belong to people moving for work, and they go where the jobs are: the suburbs north of Dallas, the I-35 corridor from Austin to San Antonio, and the west and north sides of Houston. Those deliveries are easy for a carrier. The harder ones are the subdivisions themselves. A lot of newer Texas neighborhoods have narrow cul-de-sacs, HOA rules against parked commercial trucks, or both, so the driver will often ask to meet at a big lot on the frontage road. Texas builds frontage roads along most of its urban interstates, and they make a meet-up easier here than in most states.

The military moves cars in on its own calendar. Fort Hood at Killeen (named Fort Cavazos from 2023 until June 2025, so older orders may use that name), Fort Bliss at El Paso, Joint Base San Antonio, Dyess Air Force Base at Abilene, Sheppard at Wichita Falls and Naval Air Station Corpus Christi all turn over people every summer. Students arrive in August for UT Austin, Texas A&M in College Station, Texas Tech in Lubbock, Baylor in Waco and the big Houston and Dallas campuses. Then there are the winter Texans, retirees from the Midwest and Canada who spend the cold months in the Rio Grande Valley, mostly around McAllen, Mission, Harlingen and South Padre Island. They come south in October and November, and lanes into the Valley tighten while they do.

Shipping a car out of Texas

Texas is a strong origin for car haulers, which is why most outbound lanes price below their inbound twins. Dealers and auction buyers keep the trucks moving. Manheim runs auctions on West Kiest Boulevard in Dallas, on Kopman Road near Hobby Airport in Houston, and on Ackerman Road in San Antonio, and Copart, which is headquartered in Dallas, has salvage yards around the big metros.

Personal moves out of Texas follow two calendars. Winter Texans go home in March and April, so the Valley's northbound lanes are busiest then. Families and service members leave in June and July with the end of the school year and PCS season. Austin to Los Angeles is about $860 this month and Austin to Seattle about $1,365; Dallas to Miami is about $655 for 1,311 miles, one of the better rates per mile on the page. If you are leaving the Panhandle or West Texas, expect the carrier to want a pickup near I-40 or I-20 rather than at a ranch gate.

Where a full-size carrier can’t go in Texas

A loaded car carrier runs about 75 feet. These are the Texas addresses where it can’t reach the door, and what happens instead. Your coordinator settles it before you book.

South Padre Island
The Queen Isabella Causeway is the only road onto the island, and condo garages and narrow streets rarely fit a carrier. Most handoffs happen in Port Isabel on the mainland side.
Big Bend and Terlingua
Big Bend country lies more than 100 miles south of I-10 on two-lane highways with long gaps between towns. The driver usually meets you in Fort Stockton on I-10 or Alpine on US-90.

Where the trucks actually go in Texas

Inside the triangle, distance matters less than access. Dallas to Houston on I-45 and Austin to San Antonio on I-35 are short hops for a truck that is already passing through, and the suburbs of all four metros price about the same as downtown. Galveston is reached over the I-45 causeway and is usually a door delivery. The Hill Country towns along I-10, Kerrville and Junction among them, are a modest detour west of San Antonio. Fredericksburg and the lake towns off the interstate take a smaller road and a bit more patience.

Outside it, plan around the long gaps. Amarillo sits on I-40 and gets the cross-country traffic between Oklahoma City and Albuquerque; Lubbock is about two hours south of it on I-27. Midland and Odessa sit on I-20 in the Permian Basin, where oil-field crews come and go with their trucks. El Paso is on I-10 but more than 500 miles from San Antonio. The Rio Grande Valley is a long run south of San Antonio and Corpus Christi, and South Padre Island is reached by the Queen Isabella Causeway from Port Isabel; island streets and condo garages can mean a meet-up on the mainland side. Big Bend country has no interstate at all, so a car there usually meets the truck in a larger town on I-10.

Hurricanes, ice and hail on a Texas pickup

The Gulf Coast is in hurricane season from June 1 to November 30. When a watch or warning covers Houston, Galveston, Beaumont or Corpus Christi, carriers stop loading there until it lifts, and evacuation traffic on I-45 and I-10 slows everything near the coast. Expect three to seven days of slip and a text from your coordinator with the new window. The price you booked stays where it is.

North Texas has the other weather. Spring brings tornado warnings and hail across Dallas-Fort Worth, and drivers will wait out a storm rather than load a car under it. A few days most winters bring ice that shuts bridges and overpasses on I-35 and I-20; in February 2021 a winter storm closed roads across the state for days. An afternoon pickup in a July parking lot is long and hot, so morning windows are popular from June to September.

Before a Texas pickup
  • Take the toll tag off the windshield. Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin all run cashless toll roads, and a tag left in the car keeps reading on the trip.
  • If you live in a subdivision with HOA truck rules or a tight cul-de-sac, pick a meet-up lot on the frontage road and send it to the coordinator before pickup day.
  • Keep the tank at a quarter or less, take out loose items, and photograph every panel in daylight. Hail dents show best in low-angle light.
  • Keep your phone on through the pickup window. The driver calls about 24 hours ahead and again when close; along the coast in storm season, have a second window in mind.

The coordinator texts the confirmed pickup window the day before.

Texas rules

What Texas expects once the car arrives

The rules that catch people who bring a car in from another state.

New-resident tax$90 on a car you bring with you, paid when you register; the county office tells you if a sales-tax difference applies instead.
Insurance before you can registerLiability of at least $30,000 per injured person, $60,000 per accident and $25,000 property damage.
Military and studentsActive-duty service members and non-resident full-time students at Texas colleges are not required to register their cars in Texas.
TollsCashless toll roads around Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin. Pull the toll tag before the car is loaded.

Questions

What people ask about Texas

How much does it cost to ship a car from New York to Texas?

New York to Dallas runs about $1,305 for a running sedan on an open carrier in October 2026, with most trucks between roughly $1,055 and $1,605. The run is 1,550 miles, so plan on three to four days once the car is loaded. Going the other way is cheaper: Houston to New York is about $1,085, most trucks between $890 and $1,275, and about $1,720 enclosed.

How much does it cost to ship a car from California to Texas?

Los Angeles to Houston is about $1,065 on an open carrier in October 2026, with most trucks between roughly $815 and $1,315, for 1,545 miles and three to four days on the road. Westbound costs less: Austin to Los Angeles is about $860. The calculator prices your exact ZIP pair in about 30 seconds and holds the number for 14 days.

Do I need an inspection to register my car in Texas?

Not a safety inspection. House Bill 3297 ended safety inspections for non-commercial vehicles on January 1, 2025. If you live in one of the 17 emissions counties, which include Harris, Dallas, Tarrant and Travis, the car has to pass an emissions test before you register. You have 30 days from moving here, and you pay a $90 new-resident tax at the county tax office.

Can you ship my car for a PCS move to Fort Hood or Fort Bliss?

Yes. Killeen is a short run west of I-35 at Belton, and El Paso sits on I-10, so both get regular trucks. Plan to meet the driver at a lot outside the gate. Watertown, New York to Killeen, the Fort Drum to Fort Hood move, shows up in our lane tables. Active-duty members are not required to register their cars in Texas.

How long does car shipping take to or from Texas?

A driver covers about 400 to 500 miles a day once the car is loaded. Atlanta to Dallas, 783 miles, is about two days; Dallas to Miami, 1,311 miles, about three; Seattle to Houston, 2,426 miles, five to six. Pickups in the triangle between Dallas, Houston, Austin and San Antonio usually get a truck faster than ones in the Panhandle, El Paso or the Valley.

Do you deliver to the Rio Grande Valley and South Padre Island?

Yes. McAllen, Harlingen, Mission and Brownsville get regular trucks, and lanes into the Valley tighten in October and November when the winter Texans arrive. South Padre Island is reached over the Queen Isabella Causeway; condo garages and narrow island streets can mean meeting the driver on the Port Isabel side. Your coordinator confirms the spot before you book.

What happens to my pickup if a hurricane threatens Houston?

The carrier holds until the watch or warning lifts and the roads are clear, then picks up in the next open window. Count on three to seven days of slip and a text from your coordinator with the new dates. The quoted price does not change, and the reservation fee is charged only once a carrier is assigned.

How much does it cost to ship a car from Texas to Florida?

Dallas to Miami is about $655 on an open carrier in October 2026, with most trucks between roughly $455 and $855, for 1,311 miles. Coming west costs more: Miami to San Antonio is about $1,050. Houston to Atlanta is about $630. Both Gulf states share the June to November hurricane season, so a storm at either end can add days.
