The short answer

In October 2026 a running sedan on an open carrier costs about $1,345 from New York to Wichita, about $1,240 from Los Angeles to Overland Park, and about $550 from Dallas to Overland Park. Leaving Kansas costs less: Overland Park to New York is about $965 and Wichita to Los Angeles about $1,090.

  • Overland Park car shipping

Overland Park is the center of Johnson County, on I-35 and I-435 on the Kansas side of Kansas City. Corporate transfers and new subdivisions make it the busiest Kansas address on our board. Dallas to Overland Park runs about $550, Los Angeles to Overland Park about $1,240, and Overland Park to New York about $965. HOA streets may mean a meet-up at a nearby lot.

    • From Dallas$550

  • Wichita car shipping

Wichita sits on I-35 and the Kansas Turnpike, with I-135 heading north to Salina. Aircraft plants and McConnell Air Force Base keep cars moving in and out all year. Wichita to Dallas is about $450, the cheapest lane we priced in Kansas, while New York to Wichita runs about $1,345 and Wichita to Los Angeles about $1,090.

    • From Atlanta$935
    • From Phoenix$1,070

  • Lawrence car shipping

Lawrence is on the turnpike stretch of I-70 between Topeka and Kansas City and is home to the University of Kansas. Most shipments follow the school year, arriving in mid-August and leaving in May. The streets on the hill around campus are steep and lined with parked cars, so drivers usually load at a store lot on 23rd Street or Iowa Street.

    Price a pickup in Lawrence
  • Manhattan car shipping

Manhattan sits about ten miles north of I-70, reached by K-177 or K-18, with Kansas State on one side of town and Fort Riley to the west. Summer PCS orders and the K-State calendar set the busy weeks. A carrier already on I-70 makes the short detour without much trouble, and wide lots along Fort Riley Boulevard work for loading.

    Price a pickup in Manhattan
  • Fort Riley car shipping

Fort Riley spreads along I-70 between Junction City and Manhattan and is home to the 1st Infantry Division. Gate rules decide whether the driver meets a soldier at quarters or at a lot in Junction City. June through August carries most PCS shipments, so book once orders are in hand and give the driver a window of a few days.

Price a pickup in Fort Riley
  • Topeka car shipping

Topeka, the state capital, is on I-70 and at the north end of I-335, the turnpike link to Emporia and Wichita. State government jobs and Washburn University bring a steady run of relocations. Carriers moving between Kansas City and Denver pass through town, so a Topeka address seldom waits long for a truck once it is booked.

    Price a pickup in Topeka
  • Salina car shipping

Salina is where I-135 from Wichita meets I-70, the last easy pickup heading west. Farm and ranch customers from central Kansas often drive in to meet the truck here. Past Salina, I-70 runs about 250 more miles through Hays and Colby to the Colorado line, and winter wind on that stretch can park high-sided trailers for a day.

    Price a pickup in Salina
  • Garden City car shipping

Garden City is in southwest Kansas on US-50 and US-83, roughly 90 miles south of I-70. The beef plant at nearby Holcomb and the feedyards around it bring families moving in for work. A carrier has to leave its route to get here, so expect a longer wait, or meet the truck in Wichita or at Hays.

What it costs

What it costs to ship a car to or from Kansas

Almost every car that ships into or out of Kansas is picked up or dropped off in one of two places. Johnson County, the Kansas side of the Kansas City metro, with Overland Park, Olathe and Lenexa along I-35 and I-435, is one. Wichita, about 200 miles southwest on the Kansas Turnpike, is the other. Lawrence and Topeka sit on I-70 west of Kansas City, Manhattan is a few miles north of it, and Salina sits where I-70 meets I-135. West of Salina the state opens into wheat country, and a pickup in Dodge City or Garden City is a different job from one in Overland Park.

The prices on this page come from Kansas lanes we priced in October 2026, for a running sedan on an open carrier. They differ most by direction. Bringing a car into Kansas from either coast costs several hundred dollars more than sending one out over a similar distance, so a household moving here should budget from the inbound rows. The sections below cover who ships cars in and out of Kansas, which towns sit on the truck routes, what spring storms and winter on I-70 do to a pickup date, and the title paperwork Kansas asks for.

These are October 2026 figures for the state. Your exact lane, vehicle, and week take about 30 seconds.

Shipping a car to Kansas

Three Army and Air Force installations account for a steady share of the cars headed into Kansas. Fort Riley, home of the 1st Infantry Division, sits on I-70 between Junction City and Manhattan. McConnell Air Force Base is on the southeast side of Wichita. Fort Leavenworth, where the Army runs its Command and General Staff College, is on the Missouri River northwest of Kansas City. Summer is the main PCS window at all three, and a service member who flies in usually wants the car to arrive within a few days of the household goods. Both Fort Riley and Fort Leavenworth are a short run off an interstate, so they price close to the Kansas City suburbs.

Students are the other calendar. The University of Kansas in Lawrence and Kansas State in Manhattan are both near I-70, Wichita State is in Wichita, and move-in runs from mid-August. Relocations fill in the rest of the year, most of them to Johnson County. On the inbound lanes we priced, New York to Wichita is about $1,345 and Los Angeles to Overland Park about $1,240. Atlanta to Wichita is about $935, Phoenix to Wichita about $1,070, and Chicago to Overland Park about $705. Dallas to Overland Park, about $550 for 539 miles, is the cheapest way in because I-35 runs straight up from Texas.

Shipping a car from Kansas

Outbound lanes are where Kansas pricing works in your favor. Overland Park to New York is about $965 for 1,232 miles, while the westbound run from New York to Wichita costs about $380 more. Wichita to Los Angeles is about $1,090, Overland Park to Phoenix about $1,000, and Overland Park to Atlanta about $800. Wichita to Dallas, at about $450, is the shortest run on the board. A carrier that delivered into Kansas has to fill the trailer again before leaving, and a car waiting on I-35 or I-70 is the load it wants.

The people shipping out are mostly the same groups in reverse: PCS orders out of Fort Riley and McConnell, graduates leaving Lawrence and Manhattan in May, and households leaving the Kansas City area for the coasts or Texas. Dealers send cars both ways all year, and Manheim Kansas City runs its auction on the Missouri side of the metro. If your timing is flexible, the outbound lanes stay steady through the year; Kansas has no snowbird season pushing them up.

Which Kansas towns sit on the truck routes

Two interstates carry nearly every car hauler in the state. I-35 runs from Oklahoma through Wichita and up the Kansas Turnpike to Emporia and Kansas City. I-70 crosses the whole state, from Kansas City through Lawrence, Topeka, Salina, Hays and Colby to the Colorado line. Wichita and the Kansas City suburbs sit on I-35, and Salina sits on I-70 where I-135 comes up from Wichita; all three get assigned fastest. Lawrence, Topeka and Hays are directly on I-70 and price nearly the same, and Manhattan is a short hop north of it.

The southwest corner is the part that takes planning. Dodge City, Garden City and Liberal are 50 miles or more from an interstate on two-lane US highways, and a truck has to leave its route to reach them. Expect a longer wait for a carrier willing to make the detour, or meet the driver in Wichita or on I-70 at Hays. Farm and ranch addresses at the end of a gravel road work the same way anywhere in the state. A 75-foot carrier needs a paved lot with room to turn, so the driver will ask to meet at the nearest one.

Tornadoes, hail and winter on I-70

Spring brings the storms Kansas is known for. Tornado warnings stop a carrier for a few hours, and drivers will wait out a line of severe storms at a truck stop before they load. Hail is the bigger risk for a car on an open trailer, since the top deck takes whatever falls. If you are shipping a car you would not want dented, an enclosed carrier costs 30 to 50% more and keeps it covered for the whole trip.

Winter is an I-70 problem. A blizzard on the High Plains between Salina and the Colorado line can close the interstate for a day, and wind across the open stretches stops high-profile trucks even when the road is clear. When that happens the driver waits and your coordinator texts you a new window. Nothing changes on the price. Wichita and the Kansas City area see ice storms more than heavy snow, and those usually cost a day.

Before the truck comes, Kansas edition
  • Take the K-TAG off the windshield. The turnpike reads tags and plates at highway speed, and you do not want the carrier's trip billed to your account.
  • Keep the original title with you, and leave a copy out of the car. The Highway Patrol and the county treasurer both want the original after delivery.
  • If the address is on a gravel road or a farm lane, pick a paved lot nearby with room for a 75-foot rig.
  • Quarter tank or less, nothing loose inside, and daylight photos of every panel, roof included if hail has been in the forecast.

Expect a call from the driver about a day out and a text from your coordinator with the pickup window the day before.

What Kansas expects once the car arrives

The rules that catch people who bring a car in from another state.

Safety or emissions inspectionNone. Kansas has no periodic safety or emissions inspection program.
VIN inspectionA car titled in another state must be inspected by the Kansas Highway Patrol before it can be titled here. You bring the car, the original title and your license; the inspection certificate is form MVE-1.
Registering a car you bring inWithin 90 days of establishing residency, at the county treasurer's office where the car is kept. Bring the original title, the MVE-1, proof of Kansas insurance and your previous registration.
InsuranceAt least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, $25,000 for property damage, plus personal injury protection. Kansas is a no-fault state.
TollsThe Kansas Turnpike has been cashless since July 2024. K-TAG holders pay about half the mailed-bill rate.
Western Kansas and farm addressesOff the I-70 and I-35 routes, expect a longer wait or a meet-up at a paved lot.

Current as of the review date below. The Kansas Department of Revenue, Division of Vehicles, sets them, and your county treasurer's office is the one to check before you title and register.

Questions

What people ask about Kansas

How much does it cost to ship a car from New York to Kansas?

In October 2026, New York to Wichita runs about $1,345 for a running sedan on an open carrier, with most trucks between roughly $1,070 and $1,625. The trip is 1,411 miles, so count three to four days in transit after pickup. Going the other way is cheaper: Overland Park to New York is about $965. Your own ZIP pair is a 30-second job in the calculator, and we hold that quote for 14 days.

How much does it cost to ship a car from Kansas to California?

Wichita to Los Angeles runs about $1,090 on an open carrier in October 2026, with most trucks between roughly $835 and $1,340. The reverse, Los Angeles to Overland Park, is about $1,240. Wichita to Los Angeles is 1,379 miles, about three to four days on the road once the car is loaded.

How much does it cost to ship a car between Kansas and Texas?

Dallas to Overland Park is about $550 in October 2026 and Wichita to Dallas about $450, both for a running sedan on an open carrier. These are the shortest, cheapest lanes on the Kansas board because I-35 connects all three cities directly. A Dallas to Overland Park run is 539 miles, one to two days in transit.

How long does it take to ship a car to or from Kansas?

Assigning a carrier usually takes a day or two in Wichita and the Kansas City suburbs, longer in southwest Kansas. After pickup, drivers cover about 400 to 500 miles a day: one to two days to Dallas or Chicago, about two days to Atlanta, three to four to New York or Los Angeles. Spring storms and winter closures on I-70 can add a day or two.

Can you ship a car to Fort Riley or McConnell Air Force Base?

Yes. Fort Riley sits on I-70 near Junction City and McConnell is inside Wichita, so both get trucks about as quickly as the rest of the I-35 and I-70 corridor. The driver meets you at your quarters or an off-post lot; installation gate rules decide which. Summer is the busy PCS window, so book once you have orders and give the driver a window of a few days.

What does Kansas require when I register a car from another state?

A Kansas Highway Patrol VIN inspection first. You take the car, the original title and your driver's license to an inspection station and leave with form MVE-1. Then go to the county treasurer with the MVE-1, the title, proof of Kansas insurance and your old registration. You have 90 days after establishing residency. Kansas has no safety or emissions inspection.

Do you pick up in western Kansas, like Dodge City or Garden City?

Yes, but expect a longer wait for a carrier. Dodge City, Garden City and Liberal are well off I-70 and I-35, and a driver has to leave the route to reach them. Meeting the truck in Wichita or on I-70 at Hays usually gets you assigned faster. Your coordinator tells you which option fits your dates before you book.
