The short answer

In October 2026 a running sedan on an open carrier costs about $910 from New York to Chicago and about $1,050 from Chicago to Los Angeles. Springfield to New York runs about $600, Chicago to Dallas about $945, and Miami to Chicago about $1,005. Chicago gets trucks quickly, but most city addresses mean meeting the driver at a nearby lot.

Illinois car shipping, city by city

Where in Illinois the car is decides how fast a truck comes and whether it reaches the door. Tap a city to price a pickup there.

  • Chicago car shipping

Chicago draws car haulers from every direction, with five interstates reaching the metro. From the city this month it costs about $1,050 to Los Angeles, $945 to Dallas, $745 to New York, and $1,060 to Phoenix. Coming in runs about $910 from New York and $1,005 from Miami. Lakeview, Lincoln Park, and Hyde Park pickups move to an expressway lot.

  • Naperville car shipping

Naperville sits on I-88 about 30 miles west of the Loop, and its subdivision streets are often wide enough for a curbside load. Neighboring Aurora has a priced lane to Sierra Vista, Arizona, the town outside Fort Huachuca, at about $1,050. Toll plazas on I-88 are cashless, so leave the I-PASS at home.

  • Rockford car shipping

Rockford is about 90 miles northwest of Chicago, where the Jane Addams Tollway (I-90) meets I-39. Trucks running between Chicago, Madison, and Minneapolis pass right by, so a Rockford pickup usually gets a carrier without a long wait. Retail lots along East State Street near I-90 give a driver room to load.

  • Peoria car shipping

Peoria sits on I-74 where it crosses the Illinois River, about 165 miles southwest of Chicago. Bradley University, the OSF and Carle hospital systems, and Caterpillar's plants in the area bring students, medical staff, and engineers from out of state. Older streets on the bluff above downtown are steep and tight, so drivers favor lots near the I-74 and I-474 interchanges.

  • Champaign car shipping

Champaign and Urbana host the University of Illinois, and I-57, I-74, and I-72 meet at the edge of town. Student move-in in late August and move-out in mid-May are the busy weeks, and Campustown streets have no room for a carrier. Most drivers meet at a lot near the Prospect Avenue or Neil Street exits on I-74.

  • Springfield car shipping

Springfield, the state capital, sits on I-55 halfway between Chicago and St. Louis, with I-72 heading east. Its outbound lanes are cheap this month, about $600 to New York, $815 to Miami, and $1,115 to Phoenix. Coming in, Los Angeles to Springfield is about $1,245 and Dallas to Springfield about $750.

    • From Dallas$750
    • From Los Angeles$1,245

  • Moline car shipping

Moline is the Illinois side of the Quad Cities, where I-74 crosses the Mississippi to Bettendorf and I-80 and I-88 pass close by. John Deere's headquarters and Rock Island Arsenal, on an island in the river, account for many transfers. The Arsenal needs base access, so carriers meet soldiers and civilian staff in Moline or Rock Island.

  • Belleville car shipping

Belleville is in the Metro East, about 15 miles from downtown St. Louis on I-64, with Scott Air Force Base just east of town. Airmen on PCS orders ship mostly in summer, and the meet-up is usually outside the Shiloh Gate off Route 158. St. Clair County is inside the emissions area, so most cars registered here get tested every two years.

What it costs

What it costs to ship a car to or from Illinois

Chicago is a crossroads for car haulers. I-90, I-94, I-80, I-55, and I-57 all reach the metro area, I-65 starts just across the Indiana line, and carriers running between the coasts plan their loads around it. That volume is good for anyone shipping from Illinois: there is almost always a truck within reach, and lanes out of the state price well. This month Chicago to Los Angeles is about $1,050, while Los Angeles to Springfield is about $1,245.

Every Illinois lane below was priced this month for a running sedan on an open carrier. Plan with them, and get the exact figure for your ZIP codes from the calculator. The rest of the page covers what the numbers do not: why most Chicago addresses mean a meet-up, which downstate towns sit on the main corridors, how the snowbird season and the winter change timing, and the emissions test that applies in only part of the state.

These are October 2026 figures for the state. Your exact lane, vehicle, and week take about 30 seconds.

Illinois routes, priced this month

Approximate prices for a running sedan on an open carrier, with the range most trucks on the lane land in. “Truck assigned in” is how long it usually takes to find a carrier. Transit is what one driver covers at 400 to 500 miles a day after that.

New York to Chicago car shipping

$910most trucks $755–$1,065

792 mi2 days on the trucktruck assigned in 1–3 days

About $910 for 792 miles, two days west on I-80 through New Jersey and Pennsylvania, then the Ohio Turnpike and the Indiana Toll Road. Eastbound runs cheaper, about $745 from Chicago to New York, because carriers heading back to the coast fill open slots at lower rates.

Price this route

Chicago to Los Angeles car shipping

$1,050most trucks $935–$1,165

2,017 mi5–6 days on the trucktruck assigned in 1–5 days

About $1,050 for 2,017 miles, roughly 52 cents a mile, with most drivers taking I-55 and I-44 to Oklahoma City and then I-40 west. The return, Los Angeles to Springfield, runs about $1,245, so westbound is the cheaper way across.

Price this route

Springfield to Miami car shipping

$815most trucks $665–$970

1,294 mi3–4 days on the trucktruck assigned in 1–48 hours

About $815 for 1,294 miles, among the lowest per-mile prices on any Illinois lane. Trucks head south on I-57 and I-24 toward Nashville, then take I-75 the length of Georgia and Florida. October and November are when this lane fills with snowbird cars.

Price this route

Miami to Chicago car shipping

$1,005most trucks $815–$1,190

1,352 mi3–4 days on the trucktruck assigned in 1–16 hours

About $1,005 for 1,352 miles, two to three days north on I-75, I-24, and I-65. March and April are the hard weeks to book, when Florida's winter residents bring their cars home to Chicago and the suburbs.

Price this route

Phoenix to Chicago car shipping

$1,090most trucks $910–$1,270

1,799 mi4–5 days on the trucktruck assigned in 1–37 hours

About $1,090 for 1,799 miles, about four days on I-40 and I-44 through Oklahoma and Missouri. The fall trip south costs about $1,060 from Chicago, and the spring return in March and April is when this lane fills.

Price this route

Chicago to Dallas car shipping

$945most trucks $805–$1,080

960 mi2–3 days on the trucktruck assigned in 1–3 days

About $945 for 960 miles, two days south on I-55 and I-44 to Tulsa, then down US-69 and US-75 into Dallas. Dallas to Springfield, coming north, runs about $750, so the southbound leg is the more expensive one this month.

Shipping a car out of Illinois

Outbound lanes from Illinois price low this month. Springfield to New York runs about $600 for a 943-mile trip, and Springfield to Miami about $815. Chicago to Los Angeles is about $1,050 and Chicago to Seattle about $1,330. Trucks that brought cars into the Midwest want a load to take back to the coasts, and an Illinois pickup is easy to add.

October and November bring the snowbird traffic. Retirees from the Chicago suburbs and downstate head for Florida and Arizona, and many want the car there before Thanksgiving. Springfield to Phoenix is about $1,115 right now. Book two to three weeks ahead in that window. The rest of the year, outbound shipments are mostly relocations, students leaving campus in May, and cars sold at the Chicago-area auctions, including Manheim Chicago in Matteson.

Shipping a car into Illinois

Coming in from the coasts costs more than leaving for them this month. New York to Chicago is about $910, Miami to Chicago about $1,005, Los Angeles to Springfield about $1,245, and Seattle to Springfield about $1,350. Phoenix to Chicago is about $1,090. Spring is the busy time for the Florida and Arizona lanes, when the snowbirds come home in March and April.

Students arrive in August for the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, Northwestern in Evanston, the University of Chicago, Illinois State in Normal, Northern Illinois in DeKalb, and Southern Illinois in Carbondale. Military moves come through Naval Station Great Lakes north of Chicago, Scott Air Force Base near Belleville in the Metro East, and Rock Island Arsenal in the Quad Cities, mostly in summer. Champaign, Normal, and DeKalb are all on interstates and get trucks easily. Carbondale is about 20 minutes off I-57 and can take a little longer to schedule.

Where a full-size carrier can’t go in Illinois

A loaded car carrier runs about 75 feet. These are the Illinois addresses where it can’t reach the door, and what happens instead. Your coordinator settles it before you book.

Chicago's lakefront high-rises and the Gold Coast
Lake Shore Drive is closed to trucks and building garages are far too low for a carrier. The driver meets you at a lot near an expressway, usually a short drive away.
Shawnee Hills (Golconda, Elizabethtown)
These river towns sit on winding two-lane roads far from I-57 and I-24. Expect a meet-up in Marion or a few extra days to find a truck.

Where the trucks actually go in Illinois

In Chicago, the hard part of a pickup is finding room to load. Commercial vehicles are barred from Lake Shore Drive, most city streets have parked cars on both sides, and many homes have garages on alleys a carrier cannot enter. In neighborhoods like Lincoln Park, Wicker Park, Lakeview, or Hyde Park, expect to meet the driver at a big-box or shopping-center lot near the Kennedy, the Dan Ryan, the Stevenson, or the Eisenhower. In the suburbs it is easier, and most addresses in places like Naperville, Schaumburg, or Orland Park get a curbside pickup if the street is wide enough.

Downstate, the interstates are the map. I-55 runs from Chicago through Bloomington and Springfield to St. Louis. I-57 runs south through Champaign and Effingham toward Memphis, and I-70 crosses it at Effingham on the way to St. Louis. I-74 connects the Quad Cities, Peoria, Bloomington, and Champaign, and I-80 and I-88 cross the north. Towns on those roads price close to Chicago. Towns between them, in the farm country of western Illinois or the hills of the far south near Shawnee National Forest, can wait a few extra days for a truck willing to make the detour.

Winter, and the rest of the Illinois calendar

Illinois winters are long and cold, and blizzards, ice, and wind-driven drifts on open farmland close roads a few times a year. When they do, carriers wait it out, usually for a day or two. In Chicago, snow also takes away the space a meet-up needs, and the city's winter overnight parking ban on main streets runs from December through March. Your coordinator will text you a new window if a storm moves the pickup. The quoted price does not change.

Spring brings tornado season in central and southern Illinois and flooding along the Mississippi and Illinois rivers, which can close local roads near the water. Summer brings fewer road closures and the most household moves. If you can choose, late spring and early fall are the easiest months to ship a car in or out of Illinois.

Before the truck comes, Illinois edition
  • Take the I-PASS or E-ZPass out of the car. It reads on the carrier and the truck's tolls would land on your account.
  • For a Chicago address, pick a meet-up lot near an expressway with room for a 75-foot rig, and plan on it taking an hour of your day.
  • Winter: clear the snow off the car and from around it so the driver can load without digging.
  • A quarter tank at most, loose items removed, and daylight photos of every panel; Chicago road salt makes the lower body worth an extra shot.

Your coordinator confirms the pickup window by text the day before, and the driver calls about 24 hours ahead to set a time.
