What it costs

What it costs to ship a car to or from Mississippi

In many interior states a car headed back east ships for far less than one coming in, because carriers want a load for the return run. Mississippi doesn't get much of that discount. This month Gulfport to New York costs about $1,315 and New York to Jackson about $1,285. Jackson to Denver is about $1,380, more than Denver to Gulfport at about $1,095, and Jackson to Chicago is about $935 against $980 for Chicago to Gulfport. The best-priced Mississippi lanes are short runs to the big hubs next door, Jackson to Dallas and Gulfport to Atlanta.

The figures here come from Mississippi lanes we priced in October 2026, for a running sedan on an open carrier. Jackson and Gulfport are the two ends we priced. The sections below cover who ships cars in and out of the state, from airmen at Keesler to students at Ole Miss and Mississippi State, which parts of the state sit near an interstate, how hurricane and tornado seasons move a pickup date, and what the county tax collector will want when the car arrives.

These are October 2026 figures for the state. Your exact lane, vehicle, and week take about 30 seconds.

Mississippi car shipping, city by city

Where in Mississippi the car is decides how fast a truck comes and whether it reaches the door. Tap a city to price a pickup there.

JacksonGulfportBiloxiHattiesburgMeridianOxfordStarkvilleSouthaven
  • Jackson car shipping

Jackson is where I-55 crosses I-20, so trucks from every direction pass through the metro. New York to Jackson costs about $1,285 this October, Jackson to Dallas about $485 and Jackson to Chicago about $935. Nissan's assembly plant in Canton, just up I-55, and Jackson State students in August add to the traffic through the metro.

    • From Atlanta$625
    • From New York$1,285

  • Gulfport car shipping

Gulfport sits on I-10 where US-49 heads north, with the state port downtown and the Seabee base a few miles inland. Gulfport to New York runs about $1,315 this month, Gulfport to Atlanta about $555, and Dallas to Gulfport about $575. From June through November a hurricane watch on the coast stops loading until it lifts.

    • From Dallas$575
    • From Chicago$980
    Price a pickup in Gulfport
  • Biloxi car shipping

Keesler Air Force Base fills Biloxi's calendar, with technical-training students and instructors arriving and leaving throughout the year and the heaviest PCS weeks in summer. I-110 runs from I-10 straight into the city, a short detour for a carrier on the coast run. Send your report date and the earliest day the car can leave when you book.

    Price a pickup in Biloxi
  • Hattiesburg car shipping

Hattiesburg sits where I-59 meets US-49 and US-98, a regular stop for trucks running between New Orleans and Birmingham. Southern Miss and William Carey students arrive in August, and Camp Shelby, south of town on US-49, hosts Guard and Reserve units for training. Addresses near I-59 or the US-98 shopping strip are the easiest for a driver to reach.

    Price a pickup in Hattiesburg
  • Meridian car shipping

I-20 and I-59 run together through Meridian, so trucks bound for Birmingham, Atlanta and New Orleans pass the city daily. Naval Air Station Meridian, northeast of town, trains Navy and Marine Corps jet pilots, and student moves follow the class schedule. Give the coordinator your report date so the pickup lines up with it.

    Price a pickup in Meridian
  • Oxford car shipping

Ole Miss puts Oxford on the August and May calendar, about 20 miles east of I-55 at Batesville on MS-6. Home football Saturdays fill every lot near the Grove and the Square, so pick another day. Dorm pickups usually move to a wide store lot on the MS-6 bypass, where the driver can load without blocking traffic.

    Price a pickup in Oxford
  • Starkville car shipping

Mississippi State students arrive in August, and Starkville sits on US-82 about 25 miles west of Columbus Air Force Base. Neither town is on an interstate, so expect a day or two longer to assign a truck than in Jackson. A big store lot on US-82 is the usual meet-up when a dorm or apartment street is too tight.

    Price a pickup in Starkville
  • Southaven car shipping

Southaven is on I-55 just south of the Tennessee line, part of the Memphis metro. Trucks working the Memphis hub reach DeSoto County addresses without a detour, so a pickup here is usually assigned faster than one in the Delta to the south. Newer subdivisions with wide streets often take a carrier at the door.

PCS moves at Mississippi's bases

Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi hosts the 81st Training Wing, which runs technical training for airmen, so students and instructors rotate through all year. Columbus Air Force Base trains Air Force pilots with the 14th Flying Training Wing, and Naval Air Station Meridian is one of the Navy's two jet strike pilot training bases. The Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport is home to Seabee units, and Camp Shelby near Hattiesburg trains Guard and Reserve units.

Keesler and the Seabee base sit on I-10, which keeps them easy for a carrier. Meridian is on I-20 and I-59, and NAS Meridian is a short drive northeast of town. Columbus AFB is the one off the interstates, reached on US-45 and US-82, so a pickup there may wait a day or two longer or turn into a meet-up in Columbus. Summer is the busy PCS season. Give the coordinator your report date and the earliest day the car can leave, and a window of a few days around it.

Who else ships cars in and out of Mississippi

Students make up the next big group. Ole Miss in Oxford, Mississippi State in Starkville, Southern Miss in Hattiesburg and Jackson State in Jackson fill up in August and empty in May. Oxford and Starkville both sit off the interstates, Oxford about 20 miles east of I-55 and Starkville on US-82 near Columbus, so a dorm pickup often becomes a meet-up at a wide lot in town.

Then there are relocations along the I-10 coast and in the Jackson metro, and cars bought out of state. Atlanta to Jackson runs about $625 this month, and Dallas to Gulfport about $575. From farther away, Chicago to Gulfport is about $980 and Los Angeles to Jackson about $1,395. Leaving the state, Gulfport to New York is about $1,315 and Jackson to Chicago about $935.

Where the carriers actually run in Mississippi

Five interstates do most of the work. I-55 runs north and south from the Memphis suburbs through Grenada, Jackson and McComb toward New Orleans. I-20 crosses from Vicksburg through Jackson to Meridian and on to Birmingham. I-10 follows the coast through Pascagoula, Biloxi, Gulfport and Bay St. Louis. I-59 links Meridian, Hattiesburg and Picayune, and I-22 cuts across the northeast from Tupelo toward Birmingham. Jackson, the coast, Hattiesburg, Meridian and the DeSoto County suburbs south of Memphis all get trucks without much trouble.

The Delta is the main area off those roads. Greenville, Clarksdale, Cleveland and Greenwood lie along US-61 and US-49, a long way from any interstate. The Golden Triangle, Columbus, Starkville and West Point, is reached on US-45 and US-82. Natchez sits on the river at the end of US-61 and US-84. Pickups in these places wait longer for a carrier, and many end up as a meet-up at a truck stop or a big-box lot on the nearest four-lane highway. Rural roads with soft shoulders and gravel drives are other reasons a driver will ask to meet in town.

Hurricanes on the coast, tornadoes inland

Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and the Mississippi coast is in the path of Gulf storms. When a watch or warning covers Harrison, Hancock or Jackson County, carriers stop loading there and do not drive into an evacuation. Expect a slip of several days and a text from your coordinator with the new window. The quoted price stays the same.

Inland, the risk is tornadoes, most often in spring. A tornado warning stops a truck for hours, and storm damage can close a road for longer. Plan for summer heat too. If the car has been parked for weeks, check the battery and tires so it starts and rolls onto the trailer.

Before the truck comes, Mississippi edition
  • If the address is in the Delta, Starkville, Oxford or out a county road, pick a meet-up spot on a four-lane highway in advance.
  • On the coast in hurricane season, have a second date in mind and keep the car out of low ground if a storm is forecast.
  • Keep the out-of-state registration current. Mississippi's 30-day window for new residents only applies if it is.
  • Charge the battery and check the tires on a car that has been sitting in the heat. The driver calls about 24 hours ahead to set a time.

Your coordinator confirms the pickup window by text the day before.

Questions

What people ask about Mississippi

How much does it cost to ship a car from Mississippi to New York?

In October 2026, Gulfport to New York runs about $1,315 for a running sedan on an open carrier, with most trucks between roughly $1,050 and $1,580. The other direction, New York to Jackson, is about $1,285. The trip is about 1,200 to 1,270 miles, roughly three days on the truck. The calculator prices your exact ZIP pair and holds it for 14 days.

Is it cheaper to ship a car out of Mississippi than into it?

Not by much. In October 2026, Gulfport to New York is about $1,315 and New York to Jackson about $1,285. Jackson to Denver is about $1,380 and Denver to Gulfport about $1,095. The best-priced lanes are short runs to big hubs: Jackson to Dallas is about $485 and Gulfport to Atlanta about $555. A flexible pickup window helps a coordinator match you with a truck already passing through.

Can you ship my car for a PCS move to Keesler or Columbus AFB?

Yes. Keesler in Biloxi sits on I-10 and gets trucks easily. Columbus AFB is off the interstates on US-45 and US-82, so a pickup there may wait a day or two longer or become a meet-up in Columbus. Send your report date and the earliest day the car can leave, and your coordinator plans the window around it.

How long does it take to ship a car from Mississippi?

Allow a few days to assign a carrier, longer from the Delta or the Golden Triangle. Transit runs about 400 to 500 miles a day: about a day to Dallas or Atlanta, two days to Chicago, about three to New York or Denver, and four to five to Los Angeles. Hurricane watches on the coast and tornado warnings inland can add time.

Does Mississippi require a vehicle inspection?

No. Mississippi repealed its annual safety inspection sticker effective July 1, 2015, and has no emissions test. New residents have 30 days to register at the county tax collector if the out-of-state registration is current. Bring the title, an odometer disclosure, ID and proof of liability insurance at 25/50/25, and expect ad valorem tax based on the car's value.

What happens to my pickup if a hurricane is coming to the coast?

Carriers stop loading in a watch or warning area and do not drive into an evacuation. Once the storm passes and the roads are clear, the pickup goes into the next open window. Expect several days of slip and a text from your coordinator with the new dates. The quoted price does not change.

How much does it cost to ship a car from Mississippi to California?

Gulfport to Los Angeles runs about $1,320 on an open carrier in October 2026, with a wide band of roughly $995 to $1,645. Los Angeles to Jackson is about $1,395. The trip is about 1,850 to 1,950 miles, so plan on four to five days in transit after pickup.

How much does it cost to ship a car between Mississippi and Texas?

Jackson to Dallas runs about $485 for a running sedan on an open carrier in October 2026, most trucks between roughly $415 and $555. Dallas to Gulfport is about $575, with a band of $435 to $710. Both trips are 400 to 560 miles, so the car is usually on the truck for a day or two after pickup.
