The short answer

In October 2026 a running sedan on an open carrier costs about $1,040 from New York to Atlanta and about $1,050 from Savannah to New York. Atlanta to Chicago runs about $730 and Atlanta to Dallas about $750. Los Angeles to Atlanta is about $1,335. Atlanta pickups usually get a truck within a day or two.

  • Atlanta car shipping

Atlanta is where I-75, I-85, and I-20 meet inside the I-285 loop, and a truck is rarely more than a day away. Leaving is cheap this month, about $730 to Chicago, $750 to Dallas, $805 to New York, and $405 to Miami. Coming in costs more, about $1,040 from New York and $1,335 from Los Angeles.

    • From Gulfport$555
    • From Tampa$570
    Price a pickup in Atlanta
  • Savannah car shipping

Savannah sits where I-16 meets I-95, about 250 miles from Atlanta, with Hunter Army Airfield on its south side. Lanes here cost more per mile than Atlanta's, with Savannah to New York about $1,050 and Savannah to Los Angeles about $1,420. Chicago to Savannah is about $810. The historic district's squares mean a meet-up outside downtown.

    • From Detroit$1,060
    • From Buffalo$1,160
    Price a pickup in Savannah
  • Hinesville car shipping

Hinesville wraps around the main gate of Fort Stewart, home of the 3rd Infantry Division, roughly 15 miles inland from I-95 and 40 miles from Savannah. Summer PCS orders bring most of the shipments. Most car haulers can't get on post, so the handoff is usually a parking lot in town near the gate.

    Price a pickup in Hinesville
  • Augusta car shipping

Augusta is on I-20 at the South Carolina line, with Fort Gordon and the Army's Cyber Center of Excellence on its southwest side. Transfers there peak in summer. The Masters fills Washington Road and every hotel in town during the first full week of April, so pick another week for a pickup anywhere near Augusta National.

  • Columbus car shipping

Columbus sits on the Chattahoochee across from Phenix City, Alabama, at the south end of I-185, about 100 miles southwest of Atlanta. Past Victory Drive, I-185 is open only to military traffic heading into Fort Benning, so civilian car haulers meet soldiers in town. A car from Fort Campbell to Fort Benning runs about $475.

    • From Lynnwood$1,560
    Price a pickup in Columbus
  • Warner Robins car shipping

Warner Robins is about 15 miles south of Macon, just east of I-75, with Robins Air Force Base on its east side. The base's air logistics complex employs a large civilian workforce alongside the military, so moves come through all year as well as during summer PCS season. Florida-bound traffic on I-75 passes within minutes.

Price a pickup in Warner Robins
  • Athens car shipping

Athens is about 70 miles east of Atlanta, reached from I-85 on GA-316 and ringed by its own perimeter loop. UGA's mid-August move-in and May move-out bring most shipments, and home football Saturdays clog every road into town. Carriers usually load at a retail lot on Atlanta Highway rather than on campus streets.

    Price a pickup in Athens
  • Brunswick car shipping

Brunswick is on I-95 about 80 miles south of Savannah, and the Colonel's Island terminal there moves more vehicles than any other US port, so car haulers fill this stretch of the coast. Pickups in town are simple. The causeways out to St. Simons and Jekyll are where space gets tight.

What it costs

What it costs to ship a car to or from Georgia

A lot of the car haulers on Georgia's interstates are only passing through. I-75 and I-95 are the two roads that carry Northeast and Midwest cars to Florida, and both run the length of the state, so through the fall a steady line of loaded trucks passes Atlanta, Macon, Valdosta, Savannah, and Brunswick. That traffic helps you if you are shipping from Georgia. A driver with an open slot on a Florida run can pick up in Macon without much of a detour, and drivers coming back north want a load to fill the trailer. Atlanta adds its own volume on top: a metro area of several million people, two Manheim auctions on the southwest side, and interstates leaving in six directions.

Each Georgia lane here was priced this month for a running sedan on an open carrier, as a planning number; the calculator gives you the exact figure for your ZIP codes. The text covers what changes those numbers in Georgia: which addresses sit on the main corridors and which do not, the summer rotation at the Army posts, the hurricane season on the coast, and the one-time title tax that new residents tend to find out about at the tag office.

These are October 2026 figures for the state. Your exact lane, vehicle, and week take about 30 seconds.

Georgia routes, priced this month

Approximate prices for a running sedan on an open carrier, with the range most trucks on the lane land in. “Truck assigned in” is how long it usually takes to find a carrier. Transit is what one driver covers at 400 to 500 miles a day after that.

New York to Atlanta car shipping

$1,040most trucks $810–$1,270

881 mi2–3 days on the trucktruck assigned in 1–45 hours

About $1,040 for 881 miles, run on I-95 south to Petersburg, Virginia, then I-85 through Durham, Charlotte, and Greenville. Southbound is the busier direction in the fall, and Atlanta to New York costs about $805 this month.

2,176 mi5–6 days on the trucktruck assigned in 1–21 hours

About $1,335 for 2,176 miles, five to six days. Many drivers take I-10 east and switch to I-20 in west Texas, then run through Dallas, Shreveport, Jackson, and Birmingham. San Diego to Atlanta prices almost the same at about $1,355.

PCS moves at Georgia's bases

Georgia has three Army posts, two Air Force bases, and a Navy submarine base, and a steady flow of military car shipments to match. Fort Stewart, outside Hinesville, is home to the 3rd Infantry Division, with Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah. Fort Benning sits on the Alabama line at Columbus, and Fort Gordon is outside Augusta; both took back those names in 2025. Robins Air Force Base is in Warner Robins near Macon, Moody Air Force Base is outside Valdosta, and Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay is at St. Marys, just north of the Florida line.

Most PCS moves land between May and September, and they are usually long: Fort Stewart to Fort Hood, Fort Gordon to a post in Washington state, Robins to a base in California. If you have orders, send them with the booking so your coordinator can plan the pickup around your report date. Gate access is the practical issue. Many drivers cannot get onto post, so expect to meet the truck at a lot outside the gate in Hinesville, Columbus, or Grovetown.

Shipping a car out of Georgia

Atlanta is an easy place to find a truck. This month Atlanta to Chicago runs about $730 and Atlanta to Dallas about $750, both lower than the trips into Georgia from those cities (Chicago to Savannah is about $810, Dallas to Savannah about $990), because carriers that bring cars into Atlanta want a load out of it. Savannah to New York is about $1,050, and Savannah to Boston about $1,075; both run higher per mile than the Atlanta lanes.

Students and graduates make up a chunk of the outbound traffic in May: the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia Tech, Emory, and Georgia State in Atlanta, Georgia Southern in Statesboro, the Savannah College of Art and Design, and Kennesaw State. Athens is reached from I-85 by GA-316, and home football weekends fill the town, so pick a different day if you can. Statesboro is off I-16 and takes a little longer to schedule. Dealers and auction buyers ship out all year, and a car bought at Manheim Atlanta or Manheim Georgia is an easy pickup for a carrier already working the south side of the city.

Where a full-size carrier can’t go in Georgia

A loaded car carrier runs about 75 feet. These are the Georgia addresses where it can’t reach the door, and what happens instead. Your coordinator settles it before you book.

St. Simons Island and Sea Island
Reached by the F.J. Torras Causeway from Brunswick, with tight residential streets and a private gate at Sea Island. Expect a meet-up on the Brunswick side.
Tybee Island
US-80 is the only road out from Savannah, two lanes for much of the way, and summer parking is scarce. Carriers usually meet you at a lot on the Savannah side.
North Georgia cabins (Blue Ridge, Ellijay)
Steep gravel drives and switchback roads keep a 75-foot carrier on the main highway. The meet-up is usually a lot along GA-515 or US-76 in town.

Where the trucks actually go in Georgia

Atlanta sits where I-75, I-85, and I-20 meet, with I-285 looping around the city. Anything near that loop is easy for a carrier: Marietta, Smyrna, Norcross, Duluth, College Park, McDonough. Inside the loop, older neighborhoods like Virginia-Highland, Inman Park, and much of Decatur have narrow streets, parked cars on both sides, and low trees, and a 75-foot carrier will usually ask to meet on a main road like Ponce de Leon or at a nearby shopping-center lot. Drivers also avoid the Downtown Connector at rush hour when they can, which shapes the pickup time more than the pickup day.

Outside Atlanta, I-75 runs south through Macon and Valdosta to Florida, I-16 connects Macon to Savannah, I-95 runs the coast past Savannah and Brunswick, and I-20 crosses to Augusta. Cities on those roads price close to Atlanta. North Georgia is the hard part. Blue Ridge, Ellijay, Helen, and Dahlonega are reached on winding two-lane roads, and the cabins people ship cars to are often on steep gravel drives. Expect a meet-up in town or at a lot on GA-400 or US-76. The coast is different again. Brunswick's Colonel's Island terminal handled 779,000 vehicles in 2025, more than any other US port, so car haulers are a familiar sight on I-95 there. St. Simons and Tybee Island are reached by causeway and have tight residential streets, so a meet-up on the mainland side is common.

Hurricane season on the coast, ice in Atlanta

Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. Savannah, Brunswick, and the Golden Isles sit low on the coast, and when a watch or warning covers them, carriers stop loading, and an evacuation order fills I-16 and I-95 with outbound traffic. Pickups and deliveries in that area hold until the warning lifts. Expect three to seven days of slip and a text from your coordinator with the new window. The quoted price does not change.

Inland, the winter hazard is ice. A few times a winter, freezing rain coats Atlanta's hills and overpasses, traffic stops fast when it does, and carriers wait it out, usually for a day or two. Summer heat does not slow trucks, though afternoon thunderstorms in July and August can push a pickup time to the evening.

Before the truck comes, Georgia edition
  • Take any toll tag out of the car, Peach Pass included, along with garage and gate remotes.
  • If you live inside the I-285 loop or in the mountains, agree a meet-up spot with room for a 75-foot rig before pickup day.
  • For an on-post pickup, check whether the driver can get through the gate. If not, pick a lot just outside it.
  • Leave half a tank or less, keep personal items to the trunk, and photograph every panel in daylight, including the roof if the car has been parked under pine trees.

Expect a call from the driver about 24 hours out and a text from your coordinator with the pickup window the day before.

Questions

What people ask about Georgia

How much does it cost to ship a car from New York to Georgia?

In October 2026, New York to Atlanta runs about $1,040 for a running sedan on an open carrier, with most trucks between roughly $810 and $1,270. Boston to Atlanta is about $1,070. The price for your exact ZIP pair is held 14 days once quoted.

How much does it cost to ship a car from Georgia to New York?

Savannah to New York runs about $1,050 in October 2026, most trucks between roughly $810 and $1,285. Savannah to Boston is about $1,075. Transit is two to three days once the car is loaded. Northbound lanes out of the Southeast tighten in March and April, when Florida's seasonal residents head home on the same trucks.

How long does it take to ship a car to or from Georgia?

Around Atlanta a carrier is usually assigned in a day or two; the mountains and rural south Georgia can take a few days longer. One driver covers about 400 to 500 miles a day, so Chicago and Dallas are about two days from Atlanta, New York two to three, and California five to six. Coastal storms can add three to seven days.

Can you ship my car for a PCS move from Fort Stewart, Fort Benning, or Fort Gordon?

Yes. Send your orders with the booking so your coordinator can work back from your report date. Many car haulers cannot get through the gate, so plan to meet the driver at a lot outside it, in Hinesville, Columbus, or Grovetown. Summer is the busiest PCS window, so book a few weeks ahead if you can.

Do I pay tax when I bring a car to Georgia?

Yes, once. New residents pay the title ad valorem tax (TAVT), 3% of the car's fair market value, when they first title it in Georgia. You have 30 days from moving to register, you need a Georgia license or ID first, and in the 13 metro Atlanta emissions counties the car needs a Georgia emissions test.
