The short answer

In October 2026 a running sedan on an open carrier costs about $1,055 from Miami to Burlington, $1,020 from Chicago to Rutland and $1,865 from Los Angeles to Burlington. Southbound costs more this month, with Rutland to Miami at about $1,300 and Burlington to Orlando about $1,245, because the fall snowbird run to Florida is under way.

What it costs

What it costs to ship a car to or from Vermont

Vermont has two interstates, and neither one goes to Rutland. I-89 runs from White River Junction up through Montpelier to Burlington and the Canadian border at Highgate; I-91 follows the Connecticut River from Brattleboro to Derby Line. Rutland, Bennington, Middlebury and Manchester sit on US-7 down the western side of the state, US-4 links Rutland to Killington and White River Junction, and most ski areas are on Route 100 in the mountains between. So the last stretch of most Vermont deliveries is on a two-lane road.

We priced twelve lanes for this page in October 2026, between Burlington or Rutland and six cities in Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Texas and California, for a running sedan on an open carrier. October is the start of snowbird season, and on five of the six city pairs the outbound lane costs more than the inbound one; Los Angeles is the exception. Rutland to Dallas is about $1,525 while Dallas to Burlington is about $1,120. Vermont is a small market at the end of the road for most trucks, and the Orlando to Rutland lane can wait well over a week for a carrier to take it.

These are October 2026 figures for the state. Your exact lane, vehicle, and week take about 30 seconds.

Vermont car shipping, city by city

Where in Vermont the car is decides how fast a truck comes and whether it reaches the door. Tap a city to price a pickup there.

BurlingtonRutlandBrattleboroMontpelierStoweKillingtonBennington
  • Burlington car shipping

Burlington sits at Exit 14 on I-89 and is the Vermont city carriers visit most. Miami to Burlington is about $1,055, Dallas to Burlington about $1,120 and Los Angeles to Burlington about $1,865. Burlington to Chicago runs about $1,075. Addresses on the UVM hill or in the Old North End usually meet the truck at a lot in South Burlington.

    • From Miami$1,055
    • From Dallas$1,120

  • Rutland car shipping

Rutland is where US-4 meets US-7, roughly 45 to 60 miles from the nearest interstate in any direction. Rutland to Miami runs about $1,300 and Rutland to Dallas about $1,525. Coming in, Chicago to Rutland is about $1,020 and Atlanta to Rutland about $1,030. Shopping-center lots along US-7 are the usual meet-up spots.

    • From Chicago$1,020
    • From Atlanta$1,030
    Price a pickup in Rutland
  • Brattleboro car shipping

Brattleboro is the first Vermont exit on I-91 coming north from Massachusetts, the easiest pickup in the southern part of the state. Second-home owners at Mount Snow and Stratton often meet the carrier here, because the drive west on Route 9 over Hogback Mountain and up Route 100 is long and winding for a loaded truck.

    Price a pickup in Brattleboro
  • Montpelier car shipping

Montpelier, the smallest state capital in the country, sits just off I-89 at Exit 8, with Barre next door. Norwich University in Northfield is about ten miles south and moves cadets in each August. Downtown streets along the river are tight, so a lot near the interstate exit is the usual handoff.

    Price a pickup in Montpelier
  • Stowe car shipping

Stowe is about ten miles north of I-89 on Route 100 from Waterbury. Past the village, the Mountain Road becomes VT-108 through Smugglers' Notch, which bans long trucks and closes in winter. Ski-house owners usually meet the driver in Stowe village or near the Waterbury exit, and most inbound cars arrive in November and December.

    Price a pickup in Stowe
  • Killington car shipping

Killington sits on US-4 about 11 miles east of Rutland, with the access road climbing to the resort base. Cars arrive for ski season from November on. Condo roads on the mountain are steep, so most handoffs happen at a base-area lot or back in Rutland.

    Price a pickup in Killington
  • Bennington car shipping

Bennington is in the southwest corner on US-7 and the VT-279 bypass, closer to Albany than to Burlington. Bennington College students arrive in late August. Trucks coming off the New York Thruway near Albany reach it in under an hour, and a lot on US-7 is the usual pickup spot.

Shipping a car out of Vermont

The biggest outbound flow is south to Florida in October and November, when Vermonters who winter in the Sunbelt send the car ahead and fly. This page was priced in that season. Rutland to Miami is about $1,300 and Burlington to Orlando about $1,245, against $1,055 and $1,130 for the northbound runs. If you can ship in early October or wait until after Thanksgiving, you are booking outside the busiest weeks. Give the driver a pickup range of several days.

May is the other outbound peak. The University of Vermont in Burlington, Saint Michael's in Colchester, Middlebury College, Norwich University in Northfield and the Vermont State University campuses all end their year, and students ship cars home. Burlington to Chicago is about $1,075 and Rutland to Los Angeles about $1,835 this month. A student car on the UVM campus or downtown Burlington will usually load at a lot near I-89 rather than on a residential street.

Shipping a car to Vermont

Cars come north in April and May with the returning snowbirds, in August with students, and in November and December with second-home owners opening a ski house at Stowe, Sugarbush, Killington, Okemo, Stratton or Mount Snow. People relocating from Boston and New York come year-round. Atlanta to Rutland is about $1,030 this month, Chicago to Rutland about $1,020 and Los Angeles to Burlington about $1,865, which is 2,900 miles and six to seven days of driving.

Some Vermont buyers shop out of state for a car that has never seen a salted road, and a used car bought online in Texas, Georgia or the Carolinas ships north on the same lanes. A classic or a low-mileage car is worth putting on an enclosed trailer for the trip. Whatever arrives, Vermont gives you 60 days from moving here to register the car and then 15 days to pass inspection.

Where a full-size carrier can’t go in Vermont

A loaded car carrier runs about 75 feet. These are the Vermont addresses where it can’t reach the door, and what happens instead. Your coordinator settles it before you book.

Smugglers' Notch (VT-108)
State law bans single trucks over 40 feet and tractor-trailers over 45 feet from the notch, and the road closes for winter. Cars north of the notch meet the truck in Jeffersonville or Morrisville.
Lincoln Gap
The road between Lincoln and Warren is one of the steepest paved climbs in the country and closes in winter. Cars on either side meet the truck on Route 100 in the Mad River Valley or on US-7 near Middlebury.
Posted town roads in mud season
From March into May, towns post weight limits on soft gravel roads, and a loaded carrier exceeds every one of them. The meet-up moves to the nearest state highway.

Where the trucks actually go in Vermont

Burlington, South Burlington, Williston and Essex are the easiest Vermont pickups, close to I-89 with big-box lots that a full carrier can use. White River Junction, where I-89 meets I-91, and Brattleboro, at I-91's southern entry, come next. Rutland and Bennington get regular trucks on US-7, a two-lane road for much of its length, and Killington is reached on US-4. Montpelier and Barre sit just off I-89 and are usually a door pickup if the street allows it.

The ski towns and the hill farms are where a meet-up becomes the plan. Route 100 through the Mad River Valley and up to Stowe winds through village centers, and the access roads to mountain condos are steep. The gaps across the Green Mountains, Lincoln Gap among them, are not carrier roads at all, and Lincoln Gap closes in winter. A lot of Vermont's town roads are gravel. Park-and-ride lots along I-89 and I-91, and shopping-center lots in Rutland, Middlebury and Morrisville, are the usual meet-up points, and the coordinator will name one before you book.

Mud season, foliage and snow

Mud season arrives with the thaw in March and April and can run into May. As the frost comes out of the ground, gravel roads turn soft, and towns post weight limits on back roads to keep heavy trucks off them. A loaded car carrier is far over any posted limit, so if your road is posted the pickup moves to the nearest state highway. Ask your town clerk or road crew whether your road is posted before you book.

Foliage season, from late September to mid-October, fills Route 100, US-4 and Route 9 with tour buses and leaf-peepers, and trucks move slower through the villages. Winter storms add their own delays. A nor'easter or a heavy upslope snow along the Green Mountains can hold a pickup a day or two; your coordinator texts the new window, and the quoted price does not move.

Before a Vermont pickup
  • Find out whether your road is posted for mud season (March to May). If it is, agree a meet-up on a state highway with the coordinator.
  • Take out any E-ZPass. The route south crosses toll plazas in Massachusetts, New York or New Jersey, and they would bill your account.
  • Wash off road salt and sand before the photos so scratches and chips show, and shoot every panel in daylight.
  • For a ski condo or a house up a steep drive, plan to meet at the base lot or a park-and-ride. The driver calls about 24 hours ahead.

Expect a text from your coordinator the day before with the confirmed window.

Vermont rules

What Vermont expects once the car arrives

The rules that catch people who bring a car in from another state.

Registering a car you bring inWithin 60 days of moving to Vermont, or before your out-of-state registration expires if that comes first.
InspectionWithin 15 days of registering, at a Vermont-licensed station, then every year. Bring your insurance card; the station will not inspect without it.
Purchase and use tax6% of the car's value. Tax paid to another state is credited; if that state's rate was lower, you pay the difference.
InsuranceLiability of at least $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident and $10,000 property damage.
VIN verification (form VT-010)Only in specific cases, such as a salvage history, a car registered in Canada or another country, or a car over 15 years old getting an exempt title.
Mud seasonTowns post weight limits on soft roads in spring. Expect a meet-up on a state highway, confirmed before booking.

Rules as of the review date below. The Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles is the source and the one to check before you register; the purchase and use tax is figured from the car's J.D. Power value.

Questions

What people ask about Vermont

How much does it cost to ship a car from Vermont to Florida?

Rutland to Miami runs about $1,300 for a running sedan on an open carrier in October 2026, with most trucks between roughly $1,010 and $1,590. Burlington to Orlando is about $1,245. October and November are the busiest weeks, so book two to three weeks ahead. The trip is about 1,500 miles, three to four days once the car is loaded.

How much does it cost to ship a car from Florida back to Vermont?

Miami to Burlington is about $1,055 on an open carrier in October 2026, most trucks between roughly $815 and $1,295, and Orlando to Rutland about $1,130. The northbound lanes are cheapest in the fall and tighten in April and May when snowbirds come home. The Orlando to Rutland lane can take more than a week to assign this month, so allow extra days.

Can a carrier pick up during mud season?

Yes, from a road it can use. Towns post weight limits on soft gravel and some paved back roads between March and May, and a loaded carrier is far over them. If your road is posted, the driver meets you on the nearest state highway or at a park-and-ride. Ask the town whether your road is posted, and your coordinator sets the spot before you book.

When do I need a Vermont inspection after moving?

Within 15 days of registering the car in Vermont, and every year after that, at a Vermont-licensed inspection station. You have 60 days from moving to register, sooner if your old registration runs out first. The station checks your insurance card, so carry it, and Vermont's minimum is 25/50/10 liability.

Can you deliver to a ski house at Stowe or Killington?

Usually to a lot nearby. Mountain condo roads and steep drives are not built for a 75-foot carrier, and Route 100 through the villages is tight. The driver meets you at a resort base lot, a park-and-ride or a shopping-center lot in Stowe, Waterbury or Rutland. Your coordinator names the spot before you book, and the meet-up does not change the price.

How much does it cost to ship a car from California to Vermont?

Los Angeles to Burlington is about $1,865 on an open carrier in October 2026, most trucks between roughly $1,515 and $2,210. It is 2,900 miles, six to seven days in transit. Rutland to Los Angeles is about $1,835. Enclosed adds about 30 to 50%, which buys a classic or a low-mileage car a trip out of the weather.

How much does it cost to ship a car between Vermont and Texas or Chicago?

Dallas to Burlington is about $1,120 in October 2026, but Rutland to Dallas is about $1,525, because southbound lanes are at their fall peak. Chicago to Rutland is about $1,020 and Burlington to Chicago about $1,075. The Chicago runs are about 900 miles, two days of driving once loaded.
