The short answer

In October 2026 a running sedan on an open carrier costs about $830 from Dallas to Cheyenne, about $965 from Chicago to Cheyenne, and about $1,560 from New York to Casper. Leaving is cheaper, with Cheyenne to Phoenix at about $740 and Cheyenne to New York about $1,005. I-80 closures in winter can hold a truck a day or more.

What it costs

What it costs to ship a car to or from Wyoming

Wyoming has fewer residents than any other state, and its largest towns sit on its interstates. I-80 crosses the southern edge through Cheyenne, Laramie, Rawlins, Rock Springs, and Evanston, and I-25 runs north from Cheyenne through Casper to Buffalo, where it meets I-90, which runs east to Gillette and north to Sheridan. A car hauler crossing between Salt Lake City and Nebraska passes Cheyenne and Laramie every day. A car hauler bound for Jackson, Cody, or Riverton leaves the interstate for hours of two-lane highway, and those towns wait longer for a truck.

We priced the Wyoming lanes on this page this month, for a running sedan on an open carrier. Use them to budget, and use the calculator for your exact ZIP pair. Wyoming has few trucks off the interstates and a lot of weather on them, so most of this page is about timing: when I-80 shuts, how long Jackson waits for a carrier, and when the base and the energy towns turn over.

These are October 2026 figures for the state. Your exact lane, vehicle, and week take about 30 seconds.

Wyoming car shipping, city by city

Where in Wyoming the car is decides how fast a truck comes and whether it reaches the door. Tap a city to price a pickup there.

CheyenneCasperLaramieGilletteRock SpringsSheridanJackson
  • Cheyenne car shipping

Cheyenne is the simplest Wyoming address to ship from, at the junction of I-80 and I-25 about 100 miles north of Denver. F.E. Warren Air Force Base sits on the west edge of town and turns over airmen each summer. Cheyenne to Phoenix costs about $740 this October, and Dallas to Cheyenne about $830.

    • From Chicago$965
    • From Dallas$830

  • Casper car shipping

Casper sits on I-25 in the middle of the state, the oil-field town where most central Wyoming shipments start. New York to Casper costs about $1,560 this month, while Casper to Dallas runs about $865 and Casper to Chicago about $895. Repairable cars sold at the Copart yard here leave on the same outbound trucks.

    • From Phoenix$1,240
    • From Seattle$1,165
    Price a pickup in Casper
  • Laramie car shipping

Laramie sits on I-80 west of the climb over Sherman Summit, with the University of Wyoming next to downtown. Students arrive in August and leave in May. West of town, the open stretch toward Arlington and Elk Mountain is the stretch the wind closes in winter, so a winter Laramie pickup can wait overnight for the road to reopen.

    Price a pickup in Laramie
  • Gillette car shipping

Gillette is the Powder River Basin's coal town on I-90, northeast of Casper. Mine crews rotate in and out on their own schedule, and carriers reach Gillette on I-90 from South Dakota or from Buffalo, where I-25 ends. Wide streets and big lots make most pickups in town a door pickup.

    Price a pickup in Gillette
  • Rock Springs car shipping

Rock Springs and Green River sit on I-80 in the southwest, among trona mines and gas fields. US 191 leaves I-80 here for the run of close to 180 miles north to Pinedale and Jackson, so a car from the Jackson area can meet the truck in Rock Springs and skip the wait for a carrier willing to drive up.

Price a pickup in Rock Springs
  • Sheridan car shipping

Sheridan sits on I-90 below the Bighorn Mountains, a short drive from the Montana line. Carriers between Billings and Casper pass through, and retirees here ship to Arizona each fall. Ranch addresses outside town usually mean a meet-up at a paved lot near an I-90 exit.

    Price a pickup in Sheridan
  • Jackson car shipping

Jackson takes the longest to schedule in Wyoming, with the nearest interstate hours away by two-lane road, a summer workforce that arrives in May and leaves in October, and second-home owners who move cars between seasons. Carriers come up US 191 from Rock Springs or through Hoback Junction from Idaho, because Teton Pass limits weight and bans trailers in winter.

Shipping a car to Wyoming

Wyoming's energy jobs are concentrated in a few towns. Gillette, on I-90 in Campbell County, is the center of Powder River Basin coal. Casper has long served the oil fields of central Wyoming, and Rock Springs and Green River on I-80 sit in gas and trona country. Casper is the easiest of these to reach because it sits on I-25, and Seattle to Casper runs about $1,165 this month while New York to Casper is about $1,560.

F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne turns over airmen and families on the usual summer PCS cycle, and Cheyenne, where I-80 meets I-25, is among the easiest places in the state to deliver a car. Dallas to Cheyenne runs about $830 in October 2026, Chicago to Cheyenne about $965, and Los Angeles to Cheyenne about $1,040. The University of Wyoming in Laramie, 50 miles west on I-80, brings students in during August, and Laramie gets trucks almost as easily as Cheyenne because both sit on the same interstate.

Shipping a car from Wyoming

Outbound is the cheap direction. Carriers that unload in Cheyenne or Casper want a load for the trip out, and the outbound lanes price lower. Cheyenne to Phoenix costs about $740 this month, against about $1,240 for Phoenix to Casper. Cheyenne to New York is about $1,005, while New York to Casper runs about $1,560. Casper to Dallas, Los Angeles, and Chicago all land between about $865 and $895.

Retirees who spend the winter in Arizona ship from Cheyenne, Casper, and Sheridan in October and November, and seasonal workers leave Jackson and the Yellowstone gateway towns in the fall when the summer jobs end. Copart's Casper yard sells salvage and repairable vehicles to buyers in other states, and those cars leave on trucks too. Whatever the reason, a pickup near I-25 or I-80 is easy to schedule, and a pickup off them takes longer.

Where a full-size carrier can’t go in Wyoming

A loaded car carrier runs about 75 feet. These are the Wyoming addresses where it can’t reach the door, and what happens instead. Your coordinator settles it before you book.

Jackson and Teton Pass
WY 22 over Teton Pass carries a 60,000-pound limit year round and bars trailers from mid-November to April 1. Carriers come in on US 191 from Rock Springs or through Hoback Junction instead.

Where the trucks actually go in Wyoming

I-80 and I-25 carry nearly all the car haulers that enter the state. Cheyenne, Laramie, Rawlins, Rock Springs, Green River, Evanston, Casper, Douglas, and Wheatland all sit on one of them, and Gillette, Buffalo, and Sheridan sit on I-90. Pickups there run like any interstate pickup in the region. Riverton and Lander in the Wind River Basin, Worland, Cody, and Powell in the Big Horn Basin, and Pinedale south of the Wind River Range are reached on two-lane US highways, often around 100 miles from the nearest interstate, and fewer drivers will add that detour to a cross-country run.

Jackson is the hardest regular delivery in the state. It is close to 180 miles north of I-80 at Rock Springs on US 191, or a long run in from Idaho Falls through Alpine, and the Teton Pass road to Idaho is a steep mountain highway that a loaded 75-foot carrier avoids. Residential roads around Jackson are narrow, so expect to meet the driver at a larger lot in town. Ranch addresses anywhere in the state, often miles down gravel, work the same way, with the driver meeting you at a paved lot in the nearest town.

I-80 closures and what they do to a pickup date

I-80 climbs to 8,640 feet at Sherman Summit between Cheyenne and Laramie, its highest point anywhere, and the stretch west from Laramie past Arlington, Elk Mountain, and Rawlins is open high plains where wind and blowing snow close the road regularly in winter. WYDOT also posts wind restrictions for light, high-profile vehicles on days when the road stays open. Closures can come as early as October and as late as May.

When I-80 closes, trucks wait in Laramie, Rawlins, or Cheyenne until it reopens, sometimes overnight. I-25 north of Casper and I-90 through Buffalo and Sheridan close less often but also see winter storms. For a Wyoming pickup between October and April, a window of several days gives the driver room to wait out a closure without missing the load. Your coordinator texts you the new window if the road shuts, and the quoted price does not move.

Before the truck comes, Wyoming edition
  • If the car is at a ranch or down a gravel road, pick a paved lot in the nearest town where a 75-foot rig can turn around.
  • Check WYDOT road conditions for I-80 and I-25 the day before; a closure moves the pickup, and the driver will call you.
  • Wash off the winter road grime so the condition report shows the paint, then photograph every panel in daylight.
  • Leave a quarter tank of fuel or less, take out loose items, and keep your phone on; the driver calls about 24 hours ahead.

A text from your coordinator the day before sets the pickup window.

Questions

What people ask about Wyoming

How much does it cost to ship a car to Wyoming?

In October 2026, Dallas to Cheyenne runs about $830 for a running sedan on an open carrier, most trucks between roughly $610 and $1,050. Chicago to Cheyenne is about $965, Los Angeles to Cheyenne about $1,040, and New York to Casper about $1,560. Your exact ZIP pair goes in the calculator, and the quote holds for 14 days.

Why is it cheaper to ship a car out of Wyoming than into it?

Carriers unloading in Cheyenne and Casper look for a load to take out of the state, and outbound lanes price lower. Cheyenne to Phoenix is about $740 this month against about $1,240 for Phoenix to Casper, and Cheyenne to New York is about $1,005 against about $1,560 for New York to Casper.

Can a carrier deliver to Jackson Hole?

Yes, with a longer wait for a truck. Jackson is close to 180 miles of two-lane highway north of I-80, and a loaded carrier avoids the Teton Pass road from Idaho. Many Jackson addresses are on narrow residential roads, so the driver usually meets you at a larger lot in town. Your coordinator confirms the spot before booking.

What happens if I-80 closes on my pickup day?

The driver waits in Laramie, Rawlins, or Cheyenne until WYDOT reopens the road, which can take overnight or longer in a bad storm. You get a text from your coordinator with the new pickup window, and the price you were quoted stays the same. Closures can happen from October into May, so a flexible window helps.

Does Wyoming require a VIN inspection for a car from another state?

Yes. A law enforcement officer inspects the VIN and records it on the Wyoming title application before the county issues a title. Teton County charges $10. If the car is still in another state, an officer there can complete it. Wyoming has no safety or emissions inspection beyond that.

How much does it cost to ship a car from Wyoming to Texas or California?

Casper to Dallas runs about $865 on an open carrier in October 2026, with most trucks between roughly $590 and $1,135, and Casper to Los Angeles about $885. Both trips are about 1,100 miles, so expect two to three days in transit once the car is loaded, plus time for a closure on I-80 or I-25 in winter.

How long does it take to ship a car to or from Wyoming?

Allow a day or two to assign a carrier in Cheyenne or Casper and longer for Jackson, Cody, or Riverton. Transit runs about 400 to 500 miles a day: two to three days to Dallas, Chicago, Phoenix, Los Angeles, or Seattle, and four to five to New York. I-80 closures can add a day or more between October and May.
