The short answer

In October 2026, a running sedan on an open carrier costs about $1,470 from New York to Phoenix, $1,050 from Chicago to Tucson, and $670 from Denver to Phoenix. Leaving costs more this month: Tucson to New York runs about $1,620 open and $2,470 enclosed, Phoenix to Chicago about $1,090.

What it costs

What it costs to ship a car to or from Arizona

Arizona fills up every fall. Retirees from the Midwest, Canada, and the Pacific Northwest spend the winter in Mesa, Sun City, Green Valley, Yuma, and Tucson, and some of them ship a car down rather than drive it. They come back north in the spring. In between, Scottsdale hosts a week of collector-car auctions every January that draws enclosed carriers from across the country. The rest of the year brings relocations into Phoenix, students for three state universities, and a steady trade in used cars that have never seen road salt.

The prices on this page come from the Arizona lanes we priced this month, for a running sedan on an open carrier. Most outbound lanes we priced cost more than their inbound pair right now; Tucson to Denver is about $970 while Denver to Phoenix is about $670. The sections below cover the winter-visitor calendar, the corridors the trucks use, the heat and dust of the monsoon, and the inspection steps waiting for a car registered somewhere else.

These are October 2026 figures for the state. Your exact lane, vehicle, and week take about 30 seconds.

  • Phoenix car shipping

I-10 and I-17 meet in downtown Phoenix, so trucks from both coasts and from the north pass through daily. Summer afternoons often top 110 degrees, so plan a morning pickup from June through August. Salt Lake City to Phoenix costs about $560 this month, Phoenix to Dallas about $900, and Phoenix to Chicago about $1,090.

  • Scottsdale car shipping

Barrett-Jackson's January auction at WestWorld brings enclosed carriers to Scottsdale from across the country, and those trucks book up weeks ahead. The rest of the year, the gated golf communities in north Scottsdale are the delivery question, so give the driver the gate code or meet at the entrance. Loop 101 runs through the city and keeps it an easy stop.

  • Mesa car shipping

East Mesa's RV resorts and manufactured-home parks fill with winter visitors from November through March. US-60 and Loop 202 put most of the city within minutes of a freeway. Mount Juliet, Tennessee, to Mesa costs about $1,200 this month, and Mesa to Bellevue, Washington, about $1,110.

Tucson sits on I-10 where I-19 turns south toward Green Valley and Nogales. Davis-Monthan Air Force Base drives the summer moves and the University of Arizona the August ones, with retirees arriving all fall. Chicago to Tucson costs about $1,050 this month, Dallas to Tucson about $855, and Tucson to Seattle about $1,090.

  • Yuma car shipping

Yuma sits on I-8 at the California line, about 180 miles from both Phoenix and San Diego. Marine Corps Air Station Yuma and Yuma Proving Ground send PCS moves, and winter visitors fill the town's RV parks from November to March. Yuma to Miami, a 2,482-mile run, costs about $1,545 this month.

  • Sierra Vista car shipping

Sierra Vista grew up outside the gate of Fort Huachuca, about 30 miles south of I-10 on Highway 90. The fort is home to Army intelligence training, so orders arrive all year with a summer surge. Aurora, Illinois, to Sierra Vista costs about $1,050 this month, and a truck may take an extra day to commit to the detour.

Flagstaff is where I-17 meets I-40 at 7,000 feet, and Northern Arizona University's move-in makes August its busiest week. Snow closes one or both interstates a few times each winter. Book a Flagstaff pickup between December and March with a window of several days, and your coordinator texts a new one if the road shuts.

Shipping a car to Arizona

The winter visitors set the inbound rhythm. Cars start arriving in October and the flow keeps up through December, mostly into the East Valley, the West Valley retirement towns, Tucson, and Yuma. This month Minneapolis to Tucson costs about $1,180, Chicago to Tucson about $1,050, and Seattle to Phoenix about $955. New York to Phoenix, a 2,480-mile run, is about $1,470, with most trucks between $1,255 and $1,690. From closer in, Dallas to Tucson is about $855 and Denver to Phoenix about $670.

Relocations add a steady base all year, and the military adds a summer one. Luke Air Force Base is in Glendale, Davis-Monthan in Tucson, Fort Huachuca near Sierra Vista, and Marine Corps Air Station Yuma and Yuma Proving Ground on the California line. Students arrive in August for Arizona State in Tempe, the University of Arizona in Tucson, and Northern Arizona in Flagstaff. A Flagstaff delivery is an I-17 or I-40 run at 7,000 feet, and in winter it depends on the snow.

Shipping a car from Arizona

Outbound prices this month sit above inbound on most lane pairs we priced, New York the exception at about $1,430 out and $1,470 in. Tucson to New York is about $1,620 open and $2,470 enclosed, against $1,470 for New York to Phoenix. Phoenix to Minneapolis is about $1,415, Tucson to Denver about $970, Tucson to Seattle about $1,090, and Phoenix to Dallas about $900. If you are heading north in spring with the rest of the winter visitors, March and April are the weeks to book early.

Arizona is also a place people buy cars to ship elsewhere. Dry air and snow-free roads in the low desert keep bodies and frames clean, and buyers from the Midwest and the Northeast shop Phoenix and Tucson dealers and the Manheim auction in Tolleson, west of Phoenix, for that reason. Collectors come in January, when Barrett-Jackson holds its auction in Scottsdale and RM Sotheby's holds its Arizona sale in Phoenix. A collector car bought there usually goes home on an enclosed trailer. Line up the carrier before the gavel so the car is not sitting in an auction lot for a week.

Where a full-size carrier can’t go in Arizona

A loaded car carrier runs about 75 feet. These are the Arizona addresses where it can’t reach the door, and what happens instead. Your coordinator settles it before you book.

Sedona
Roundabouts on State Route 89A and tight canyon roads make Sedona a poor fit for a full-size carrier. Owners meet the driver in Cottonwood, Camp Verde, or at the I-17 exit for Highway 179.
Jerome
The town clings to Cleopatra Hill, and State Route 89A climbs through it in switchbacks. Plan to meet the driver at a lot in Cottonwood, about ten miles below.

Where the trucks actually go in Arizona

I-10 is the main line. It enters from California at Ehrenberg, runs through Phoenix and Tucson, and leaves for New Mexico at San Simon, and it is the route for nearly every truck going between Southern California and Texas. I-17 climbs north from Phoenix to Flagstaff, where it meets I-40, the east-west route through Kingman, Flagstaff, Winslow, and Holbrook. I-8 links Yuma to I-10 near Casa Grande, and I-19 runs from Tucson south to Nogales.

Phoenix, the East and West Valleys, and Tucson sit on I-10 and price at the low end. Yuma is on I-8, a straight run from San Diego or Phoenix. Prescott, Sedona, Payson, Show Low, and the White Mountains are off the interstates on two-lane highways, and Sedona's roads and roundabouts in particular are a poor fit for a 75-foot rig. A pickup there is often a meet-up in Flagstaff, Camp Verde, or on I-17.

Monsoon season, and what it does to a pickup date

The monsoon runs from mid-June through September. Afternoon storms push walls of dust ahead of them, and the worst of them can close I-10 between Phoenix and Tucson while visibility drops to nothing. Carriers pull over and wait like everyone else, so a pickup can slide from afternoon to evening, or to the next morning. Phoenix summer afternoons often pass 110 degrees, so an early-morning pickup is easier on everyone from June to August. Your coordinator texts any change; the quoted price stays the same.

Winter is a northern problem. Snowstorms can close I-17 and I-40 around Flagstaff, while Phoenix and Tucson stay dry. If your car is going to or from Flagstaff between December and March, keep the pickup window a few days wide.

Before the truck comes, Arizona edition
  • In metro Phoenix or Tucson, book the emissions test for the week the car arrives; the car cannot be registered without it.
  • From June through August, load early in the day, before the paint is too hot to touch during the inspection.
  • If you live in Sedona, Prescott, or the White Mountains, agree on a meet-up spot on I-17 or I-40 before pickup day.
  • Leave about a quarter tank, clear out sunshades and loose items, and photograph each panel before the driver arrives.

Expect a call from the driver roughly a day out and a text from your coordinator the day before confirming the window.

Questions

What people ask about Arizona

How much does it cost to ship a car to Arizona?

In October 2026, New York to Phoenix runs about $1,470 for a running sedan on an open carrier, most trucks between roughly $1,255 and $1,690. Chicago to Tucson is about $1,050, Minneapolis to Tucson about $1,180, Seattle to Phoenix about $955, and Denver to Phoenix about $670. Run your own ZIP codes through the calculator for an exact figure; we hold it in writing for 14 days.

How much does it cost to ship a car from Arizona to New York?

Tucson to New York runs about $1,620 on an open carrier in October 2026, most trucks between roughly $1,330 and $1,910, and about $2,470 enclosed. The trip is about 2,500 miles, so count five to six days on the truck. If you are leaving with the winter visitors in March or April, book a few weeks early.

When is the best time to ship a car to Arizona for the winter?

September or early October, before most winter visitors book. Inbound lanes from the Midwest and the Northwest are busiest from October through December. Booking two to three weeks out, with a pickup window of several days, gives you the widest choice of trucks. For the trip home, book early for March and April.

How long does it take to ship a car to or from Arizona?

A day or two to assign a carrier in Phoenix or Tucson, then about 400 to 500 miles a day on the truck. That is about two days from Denver or Dallas, three to four from Chicago, Minneapolis, or Seattle, and five to six from New York. A monsoon dust storm or Flagstaff snow can add hours to a day.

What does Arizona require to register a car from another state?

In metro Phoenix and Tucson, an emissions test before the car can be registered, unless it is in its first five registration years. You need Arizona insurance and the out-of-state title, and you pay the vehicle license tax with the registration. A Level I inspection is only needed in some cases, such as a car without proof of title. Register as soon as you become a resident.

Can you ship a car to or from the Scottsdale auctions in January?

Yes. Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale and RM Sotheby's Arizona sale both run in January, so book an enclosed carrier for that week early. A collector car usually ships enclosed, which costs roughly 30 to 50% more than open. Arrange the pickup before the sale so the car leaves the auction lot within days.

What happens to my shipment during a monsoon dust storm?

The carrier pulls off and waits for the storm to pass, then continues. If I-10 closes between Phoenix and Tucson, the wait can run longer. Your coordinator texts any change to the pickup or delivery window. The quoted price does not change.
