The short answer

In October 2026 a running sedan on an open carrier costs about $560 from Chicago to Morgantown, about $815 from Charleston to Orlando, and about $995 from Miami to Charleston. From Los Angeles to Charleston it runs about $1,510. Addresses in the southern coalfields and mountain counties usually mean meeting the truck near an interstate exit.

Where a full-size carrier can’t go in West Virginia

A loaded car carrier runs about 75 feet. These are the West Virginia addresses where it can’t reach the door, and what happens instead. Your coordinator settles it before you book.

Southern coalfields
Logan, Williamson and Welch sit in narrow valleys on US 119 and US 52 with few turnarounds for a long rig. Drivers meet you at a big-box lot in Logan or near I-64 or I-77.
Snowshoe
The resort village sits at the top of a six-mile climb from WV 66. A loaded carrier avoids that road, so the handoff happens at a paved lot down on WV 66 or US 219.
Harpers Ferry
Lower Town sits inside the national historical park, with steep, narrow streets and little parking. The driver meets you at a lot along US 340 instead.
Canaan Valley and Davis
The valley floor sits above 3,000 feet and gets heavy snow through ski season. Winter pickups usually move to a lot on the nearest US highway, set before booking.

What it costs

What it costs to ship a car to or from West Virginia

Car carriers in West Virginia stay on six interstates. I-64 runs east to west through Huntington, Charleston, Beckley, and Lewisburg. I-77 comes up from Virginia through Princeton and Beckley to Charleston and Parkersburg. I-79 climbs north from Charleston to Clarksburg and Morgantown, and I-68 heads east from Morgantown into Maryland. I-81 crosses the Eastern Panhandle at Martinsburg, and I-70 clips the Northern Panhandle at Wheeling. Everything between those roads is two-lane highway through steep, narrow valleys, and that is where most shipping questions in this state come from.

Prices here are this month's West Virginia lanes for a running sedan on an open carrier, good for budgeting, and the calculator returns a quote for your exact ZIP pair. For most people in the state the harder question is whether a truck can reach the house at all, so this page spends as much time on roads and weather as on dollars, and ends with the inspection and title deadlines.

These are October 2026 figures for the state. Your exact lane, vehicle, and week take about 30 seconds.

West Virginia car shipping, city by city

Where in West Virginia the car is decides how fast a truck comes and whether it reaches the door. Tap a city to price a pickup there.

  • Charleston car shipping

The capital sits where I-64, I-77 and I-79 meet on the Kanawha River, so carriers on all three pass through town. Charleston to Orlando costs about $815 this October, Charleston to Chicago about $800, and Miami to Charleston about $995. Houses on the hillsides above the river sit on steep, narrow streets that call for a meet-up near an exit.

    • From Miami$995
    • From Phoenix$1,325

  • Morgantown car shipping

WVU fills Morgantown in August and empties it in May, and the city sits at the junction of I-79 and I-68. Chicago to Morgantown costs about $560 this month, the lowest price on any lane into the state, while Morgantown to Los Angeles runs about $1,385. Home football Saturdays clog the roads near the stadium, so pick another day.

    • From Chicago$560
    • From Orlando$940
    Price a pickup in Morgantown
  • Huntington car shipping

Marshall University and the Ohio River shape Huntington, with I-64 along the south side of town and bridges to Ohio and Kentucky. Carriers coming east from Kentucky reach Huntington before Charleston. Copart's yard in Hurricane is about 20 miles east on the same interstate, and auction cars from it leave on the I-64 trucks.

    Price a pickup in Huntington
  • Martinsburg car shipping

Martinsburg sits on I-81 in the Eastern Panhandle, about 80 miles from Washington, and many residents commute to Northern Virginia and Maryland. Carriers run I-81 past it every day, so pickups here schedule like a Virginia or Maryland lane. Charles Town lies east on WV 9, close enough for the same truck.

    Price a pickup in Martinsburg
  • Wheeling car shipping

Wheeling sits in the Northern Panhandle on I-70, about an hour from Pittsburgh, with Ohio across the river. Carriers running I-70 between Columbus and Pennsylvania cross the city, so it ships more like an Ohio stop than a mountain one. The hillside neighborhoods above downtown have tight, steep streets that need a meet-up.

    Price a pickup in Wheeling
  • Parkersburg car shipping

Parkersburg lies on the Ohio River at I-77, with US 50 running east toward Clarksburg and west into Ohio. Carriers on I-77 between Charleston and Marietta, Ohio pass the city. Older streets near downtown and the river are tight for a 75-foot rig, so the handoff often happens at a lot near an I-77 exit.

    Price a pickup in Parkersburg
  • Beckley car shipping

Beckley is where I-64 joins I-77 on the West Virginia Turnpike, and an E-ZPass left in the car will pay the truck's tolls. New River Gorge National Park is about 20 miles north on US 19. Long grades on both sides of town slow loaded carriers in ice, so a winter pickup needs a day of slack.

Shipping a car to West Virginia

The two big campuses set the calendar for cars arriving in the state. West Virginia University in Morgantown and Marshall University in Huntington both enroll students from neighboring states, and Huntington sits right on the Ohio River across from Ohio and Kentucky. Move-in falls in August for both, and a family that flies in for orientation can have the car shipped to arrive the same week. Morgantown sits where I-79 meets I-68, so it gets trucks easily; downtown and the streets around the Evansdale campus are steep and tight, and the driver will ask to meet in a flat lot near an exit.

The Eastern Panhandle is a separate market. Martinsburg, Charles Town, and Shepherdstown sit on or near I-81 within commuting range of northern Virginia and the D.C. area. Those lanes behave like Virginia and Maryland lanes, with plenty of trucks passing on I-81 every day. From farther away, Chicago to Morgantown runs about $560 this month, Orlando to Morgantown about $940, and Dallas to Morgantown about $1,100.

Shipping a car from West Virginia

West Virginia was one of three states to lose population between the 2010 and 2020 censuses, and relocations out of the state run all year. Charleston to Orlando costs about $815 in October 2026 and Charleston to Dallas about $1,040. Retirees who winter in Florida ship south in October and November and north again in the spring, and those weeks on the lanes toward Florida run tighter than the rest of the year.

Auction buyers add outbound traffic of their own. Copart's Charleston-area yard sits on US 60 in Hurricane, between Charleston and Huntington, and out-of-state buyers ship salvage and repairable cars from it to their own shops. Chicago is a short lane in both directions. Charleston to Chicago runs about $800 this month, while Chicago to Morgantown, a slightly longer trip, is about $560.

Where the trucks actually go in West Virginia

Huntington, Charleston, Parkersburg, Morgantown, Clarksburg, Fairmont, Beckley, Princeton, Martinsburg, and Wheeling all sit on an interstate, and a door pickup in those towns is usually possible if the street is wide enough. Bluefield, Lewisburg, and Bridgeport are a short run off the highway and price close to them. The southern coalfields are the hard part of the map. Logan, Williamson, Welch, and the towns along US 119 and US 52 sit in narrow valleys with tight curves, low trees, and few places to turn a long rig, so pickups there usually happen at a big-box lot in Logan or near the interstate at Charleston, Beckley, or Princeton.

The mountain counties in the east work the same way. Snowshoe in Pocahontas County, Canaan Valley and Davis in Tucker County, and Elkins in Randolph County are reached on two-lane roads with long grades. Corridor H, the four-lane US 48 being built from I-79 at Weston toward the Virginia line, has made Elkins and the Davis area easier to reach, but parts of it are still under construction. If your address is up a gravel road or a hollow, plan to meet the driver on the nearest US or state highway with a paved lot. Your coordinator will name a spot before booking.

Mountain winters, floods, and what they do to a pickup date

Snow in West Virginia depends on elevation more than latitude. Charleston and Huntington in the river valleys see a few storms a year, while the high country around Snowshoe, Canaan Valley, and the I-68 ridges east of Morgantown gets snow from November into April. The steep grades on I-64 between Beckley and Lewisburg and on I-77 south of Beckley are where a loaded carrier slows down or waits in ice. When a storm is on the route, the driver holds until the roads are treated, and you get a text from your coordinator with the revised window.

In the south, flash flooding is the bigger risk. The creeks in the coalfield valleys rise fast after heavy rain and can close the only road into a town for a day or longer. A pickup in that area should be scheduled with a few days of flexibility, and a meet-up on higher ground near the interstate is often the faster option after a storm. Weather delays move the date only; the quoted price holds.

Before the truck comes, West Virginia edition
  • If you live up a hollow or on a gravel road, pick a paved lot on the nearest highway where a 75-foot carrier can pull in and out.
  • Pull the E-ZPass tag off the windshield. The carrier may run the Turnpike on I-77, and a tag riding on the trailer can post the truck's toll to your account.
  • Photograph every panel and the underside edges in daylight, fuel at a quarter tank or less, and remove anything loose inside.
  • Keep a phone that works where you are. Cell coverage drops in the valleys, and the driver calls about 24 hours ahead to set a time.

Your coordinator texts the confirmed pickup window the day before.

Questions

What people ask about West Virginia

How much does it cost to ship a car from Florida to West Virginia?

Miami to Charleston runs about $995 for a running sedan on an open carrier in October 2026, with most trucks between roughly $850 and $1,140. Orlando to Morgantown is about $940. Heading south costs less on the Orlando lane: Charleston to Orlando is about $815. Run your ZIP codes through the calculator for a quote that holds 14 days.

How much does it cost to ship a car from West Virginia to California?

Morgantown to Los Angeles runs about $1,385 on an open carrier in October 2026, with most trucks between roughly $1,170 and $1,600. The westbound trip is about 2,450 miles, so count five to six days in transit after pickup. Coming east, Los Angeles to Charleston is about $1,510.

Can a car carrier pick up in the southern coalfields?

Sometimes at the door, often not. Roads like US 119 and US 52 and the hollows off them are narrow and curvy, with few places for a 75-foot rig to turn around. The usual plan is to meet the driver at a paved lot in a larger town such as Logan or near I-64 or I-77. Your coordinator confirms the spot with you before booking.

Do I need a West Virginia inspection when I bring my car here?

Yes. West Virginia inspects vehicles every 24 months, and a car you bring in has 10 days from the date it is titled here to pass at a State Police licensed station. Valid stickers from nine states, including New York and Texas, are honored until they expire. You also need to title and register within 30 days of establishing residency.

Will I pay West Virginia's 6% tax on a car I already own?

Not if you are a new resident and the out-of-state title is already in your name. The DMV waives the 6% title tax for new residents who apply within 30 days of establishing residency and who were not West Virginia residents when they got the vehicle. Leased vehicles do not qualify for the waiver.

How long does it take to ship a car to West Virginia?

Allow a day or two for a carrier to be assigned on the interstate cities and longer for the coalfields or the mountain counties. Transit runs about 400 to 500 miles a day: about a day from Chicago, two from Orlando or Miami, about three from Dallas, four to five from Phoenix, and five to six from Los Angeles. Winter storms on the high ground can add a day.

How much does it cost to ship a car from West Virginia to Texas?

Charleston to Dallas runs about $1,040 on an open carrier in October 2026, with most trucks between roughly $880 and $1,200. Coming the other way, Dallas to Morgantown is about $1,100. Both trips are a little over 1,000 miles, so plan on two to three days on the road once the car is loaded.
